First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 2019 Twentyninth edition Tao Le Vikas Bhushan 9781260143676 Books Reviews
- A brief inspection reveals the addition of a HUGE number of new diagrams and pictures which improve the clarity of many, many concepts. As usual, great for any medical student getting ready for Step 1. As naturopathic medical students, we often use this 792-page bible to prepare for our first licensing exam and, no doubt, the entire cohort will be acquiring this bad boy.
Some new diagrams/pictures include
1) Mutations in DNA
2) Protein synthesis
3) Autosomal trisomies
4) Ethanol metabolism
5) Immunology was restructured and it reads more logically
6) Endo vs exotoxins
7) HIV diagnosis algorithm - GREAT diagram.
8) Some additions about the immunology of cancer (v. important) - can be found in the general pathology section
9) Hematology and oncology - rearranged order plus great diagrams about hematopoiesis, pro- and anticoagulation
10) MSK - lovely diagrams about radiculopathy
11) Very nice additions to the neuro section, e.g. lower extent of spinal cord
12) Some handy photos of real-life examples of embryo pathologies
13) Illustrations on the gonadal drainage
14) GI - more histological slides and embryo photos
15) Lots of diagrams in cardio/respiratory to complement the text, e.g. blood supply of myocardium
16) Many other minor tweaks )
Hope this helps meds students getting ready for their first licensing exams in 2019! Good luck, everyone. ) - I was a little reluctant to purchase this since I had already done all my annotations on the previous edition of the book. However, due to my exam being really close, I couldnt wait for the ebook to come out so I went ahead and ordered the hardcopy, and boy am I glad that I did!
Not only does this edition have some newer content (eg immune evasion by cancer) but also the pre-existing information has been updated and in some cases rearranged in a much more presentable way (eg, the horrible Neurocutaneous Syndromes now seem less daunting). New images (eg histology slides for the Transplant rejection reactions), charts (eg Diagnosis of HIV) and tables (eg different radiculopathies of the lower extermity) are commendable.
A minor glitch for me was that some of the pages had ink bleeds on them but that can be easily overlooked compared to the overall worth of this book. Keep up the good work FirstAidTeam!! - Just received this product. Many of the pages have blue ink splattered onto them making some pages partially unreadable and generally aesthetically poor.
- I'm enjoying the updated version, but unfortunately both books I ordered had the same ink splashing on the same exact pages. Still usable as I only found it on two pages, but there needs to be some quality control.
- Recently upgraded from my 2016 First Aid book. Purchased 2 of the 2019 books. The index/page numbers unfortunately does not line up at all (off by 1-3 pages each time) and one of my books came damaged (wrinkles and a folded corner). Really disappointed.
- I ordered this book to update my medical references library for the USMLE as I am yet to take my STEP 1. I did so optimistically but soon started to regret it as I read some reviews here on . Sadly my worst fears came to be as, right of the bat, the quality of this book was noticeably worse than previous iterations, even my badly beaten, stained and water damaged First Aide 2018.
Still, I was optimistic that, maybe in some effort to reduce costs, the publisher would have had to lower the quality of the book itself; a sentiment that didn't last when I saw the watermark/authenticity seal common from these books was missing. Nowhere to be found.
Fortunately, another classmate happened to have this new edition, purchased out form a different retailer. I asked him if I could compare both and by doing so my fears where confirmed. Not only the thickness of the book itself was affected, but so was the quality of the cover; gone was the characteristic, grainy and resistant cover of a book meant to be used, reused and abused for study.
The pages were not of bad quality, but compared to the original it was as if most of the printed text and diagrams were blurry, giving the appearance that the ink wasn't allowed to set, or worse still, that the electronic source used for printing this material had somehow suffered from a reduced pixelation.
The rating is not lower, as it is impossible to rate lower than a single star. I have decided to return it and expect nothing less than a full refund. Being a customer for more than 10 years (and a prime member at that) I am extremely disappointed by how this turned out. - Index page numbers are wrong. This makes this edition much less usable.
- I upgraded my FA from my 2016 edition as I plan on taking Step 1 this spring.
There are a lot of wonderful, new diagrams and explanations. Unfortunately, the index is often incorrect (I've started writing in the right pages numbers in the index once I find them to save time in the future.) I've wasted a lot of time trying to find what I need. I've also email McGraw Hill customer service about this issue twice without a reply.
If you are someone who likes to cross-reference subjects while you study, or are using FA in conjunction with a question bank, you'll have trouble finding the subjects in your book if using the index.
UPDATE 3/8/19
Customer service emailed me back. After I let them know about a few of the index errors I had corrected in my book. They sent me a digital copy of the revised index which is all I asked for and needed.
